The biggest carps ever caught in the world

Yes, carp giant is not a fiction, not the fantastic dreams of fishers, but a reality. By the way, these fish can surprise not only with weight but also with its lifespan. Their lifespan can envy not just the fish but us – people. Some say that Ponchartrain’s ponds were full of fifty-year-old carp. In this photo set, you will see the biggest carps ever caught in the world in latest years. Their weight is authentic and fixed the fact of the capture. 39, 41, 46, and even 48 kg carps are a living dream of those who caught them. Most of this fish took first places in the rating of world records. Each photo has information about catching.

The biggest carp that was passed in May of 2015 – weighted around 48 kg. It found him in Hungary on the Euro Aqua reservoir. This small reservoir works on the club system. Fishing is allowed only for club members. The tank is filled continuously with large carps. Cost of fishing is – 1600 euro for the week. Area of water is 10-12 hectares.

Catch of 44 kg scaly carp in France on Lake Lac du Der-Chantecoq (Der-Shantecoc) in October 2015 seems much more relevant. It’s only 4 kilograms away from the world record but look at that lake.

Firstly it’s a public water, not commercial. Interesting fact: the lake is an integral part for cranes – about 75 thousand of these birds rest here on the road to the south. It is not surprising that the reservoir opens up space for so many living beings: its area is 4800 hectares. In fact, the capture of this carp is more admirable than the current world record. But weight is weight. However, this carp is still the largest among those caught on public water bodies.

Giant carp named Mary liven in Germany and a few times was a world record, it’s last weight was 41 kg 450 g. That carp died in 2012.

“Eric’s Common” – is one of the biggest carps of Rainbow Lake in French – a dream of most carp fishers. It caught him many times. The fish also was a world record once with the weight of 41 kg but held the first place only for two weeks.

Another giant from lake Rainbow – a world record of 2010. A 42 kg carp caught in -3 temperature was the only fish caught during that session.

And again Euro Aqua: first caught fish that crossed the line of 46 kg in 2012. It was the biggest carp in the world for that time.

The Scar – carp that lives in lake Les Graviers in France, became a world record in 2010. It gained its name because of the scar on its body. In the photo pictured at different times in weight from 39 to 44 kg.

Another famous carp from lake Rainbow, this time mirror one, named “Ken Dodd”. It was caught in 2011 and weighed 39 kg.

Neptune waters – the biggest carp from another public reservoir of France. Its weight was 38.2 kg.

Another carp, Another carp that visits the carp mat as often as its own home is the Shoulders from the French pond Abbey Lake. In 2012, this carp was caught by Dutch fisher from Lisette Benders, setting a world record for weight among women. Shoulders weight at that time was 38 kg. Today it has grown to almost 44 kilograms.

There are still a few very large carps in the Rainbow lake -with weight over 36 kg. Briggs Fish – one of these wanted trophies.

In 2006 on the German territory in the unknown reservoir, caught a 38,6 kg carp. It holds the status of the biggest carp for a long time.

It had a weight of 29 kg 610 grams, and they caught him in 2011 on one of the wild waters of Volyn region, and then transported to “Prilbychy.”

There is a perspective type of acclimatisation, which is not smaller, but even more significant than the common carp and caught on the same rigging gear, the Siamese giant carp or large barbel.

Latin Catlocarpio siamensis

Siamese mirror carp is the most significant representative of the carp family. The length of some specimens can reach 2 meters, and weight – 100-120 kg. To catch such a fish is the dream of any fisherman, and it is quite real. It found Giant barbel in the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand (the McLong River), Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam. They prefer to hide in deep places of large rivers. But in the rainy season, when rivers come out of the shores, you can meet them in small river canals, lakes and backwaters.

During waterline fall siamese carp (young and old) come back from flooded areas in main river areas and tributaries. Giant barbel is a representative of large herbivorous fish. Most often, the length of his body does not exceed 1-1.5 meters, but there are also 2-meter specimens weighing 100-120 kilograms. Some sources mention 3-meter giants weighing up to 300 kilograms. The large scales covered the whole body of the giant carp.

The fish has a different colour, which varies from blue-green to bronze. The mouth is large and located at the bottom of the head. He perfectly adapted to the search for food on the muddy bottom. Giant carps are omnivorous. They feed on aquatic plants, small crustaceans, plankton, fruits of plants, can found shrimp and other livestock. The largest individuals will not refuse from the new shed cancer with its soft cover. The vast body ends with an equally large tail, which is a formidable weapon of defence. So, brave fishers, should be careful when catching it and be afraid of blows of a powerful tail.

Finding a giant carp is not an easy task. But still, lovers of extreme fishing are sent for the sake of his capture in Thailand, where sport and commercial fishing is common. The best places are Shadow Lake and Lake Bungsamran. The largest one caught in 2007 in Lake Bung Sam Lan, not far from Bangkok, weighed 127 kg. Luck smiled at a Thai fisherman named Kick from Phuket. He is engaged in making fishing rods and at that time decided to try out his new rod for durability. The previous record lasted 23 years – in 1984 a Siamese carp weighing 107 kilograms was caught.

Usually, with these giants, they conduct a local photo shoot and let go back into the water, but this does not always happen. Also, a promising species for commercial fish farming and fishing is such a species of North American fish as buffalo. Now it’s getting smaller and smaller. The main reasons for the reduction in the number of giant carp are commercial fishing, the construction of dams that block the migration of these fish during breeding periods, and water pollution.

Sucker

(Latin Catostomidae) – a family of fish from the order of carp.

Suckerfish looks like carps, caught him on the same gear, it’s believed that they originate from them. You can determine sucker by thick, covered with hair lips. This fish never has antennas, any thorns, and included the body with well-marked scales. It is an object of amateur fishing.

The family includes about 80 species that live mainly in North and Central America, as well as several species in the Far East – in the Yangtze and Kolyma.

In the waters of Russia, one native species is the common sucker (Catostomus catostomus) and three North American acclimatised ones: Ictiobus Bubalus, Ictiobus cyprinellus, black buffalo (Ictiobus niger). All types of buffalo – is typically freshwater fish (common in the basins of the Mississippi and Missouri, Erie and other Great Lakes rivers), but reproduction and commodity cultivation are possible even in brackish waters.

The temperature optimum of buffalo growing exceeds 20° C, and therefore it is not possible to expect a significant increase at their expense for fish products in conditions of a temperate climate. At the same time, Buffalo is relatively winter-hardy and tolerates wintering well not only in the central part of Russia but also in the Altai. Buffalo has a significant potential for growth. In limits of nature, the adults of the fastest growing more massive buffalo usually have a mass of about 15 kg (maximum 45 kg).

The largest celebration of black and small buffalo is 15-20 kg. In experiments on the study of the features of the growth of new objects in the Krasnodar Territory, the greyhound-sized buffalo reached a mass of 500 g, black buffalo 216 g, small-headed up to 190 g, at the age of two, the mass was 1,500 for a larger one, and 1,200 for black and small-hairs. In ecosystems of waters that are full of fish, invaders occupy different biotopes, which is because of the large part of nature of their nutrition.

Large-boned buffalo is kept in the water column, black at the bottom of the coastal, low-water at the bottom of the open reservoir zone. The primary source of food for buffalo is plankton (benthic organisms not more than 15%). In contrast, black and small-horned buffalo, with an increase in weight, shift to the predominant consumption of benthos, which is more than 80% of the food clot in large-year-olds and adult fish.

When grown in ponds, buffalo is able, although with less activity than carp, consume food. As for the reproduction – this spring fit filefish with a one-time spawning. In the real situation, it spawns in March – June in temperature of 16 – to 27 °С. Better conditions for reproduction and feeding of buffalo are available in waters for the integrated use of the southern zone of the country, as well as reservoirs-coolers of power facilities. Self-reproducing flocks of buffalo may found in the Krasnodar reservoir.

In the pond farms of the Krasnodar Territory, large buffalo males mature in the third year, black buffalo on the fourth and short-sighted in the fifth year of life. In the Moscow region, the females of these fish stay behind in the sexual development in comparison with the southern areas for 5-6 years.

In the USSR, developed a technology for breeding buffalo, based on the factory method of reproduction of carp. In many regions of the country, formed their uterine herds.

The organisation of commercial cultivation of buffalo in ponds requires the transition to a new type of polyculture: three species of buffalo and herbivorous fish with a predominance of white carp. At the same time, the effectiveness of such a multicultural is not high: no more than 6-8 c / ha due to all three types of buffalo. However, given the immunity of these fish to infectious diseases such as rubella, gill necrosis, inflammation of the swim bladder, their introduction into the pond culture of our country has not developed much.

Three types of buffalo:

(Ictiobus cyprinellus) – The most abundant fish from it’s kind: can grow to 150 cm in length and weight of 45 kg. Lifespan – more than 20 years. Lives near the shores in adjacent bottom areas with the slowed stream. Occurs in lakes and ponds feels good in muddy water Spawns in May-June. Has a dark brown colour with dark-grey back or olive-bronze, sides are lighter; the belly is yellow or whitish, the fins are monophonic, usually brownish-grey. Fish, living in turbid waters, often pale or yellowish, in pure-olive-blue.

More warm loving than carp. A natural inmate of large rivers, channels and floodplain lakes, swamped branches, and other water bodies.

Adapted to life in muddy waters, which opens a perspective for widespread in highly silted ponds.

In real situation likes shallow (up to 5 meters deep) sections of water bodies with slow flow or standing water. During the whole summer it lives a gregarious way of life, however on hot days they disperse all over the water area, and the fish hide from direct sunlight in dense thickets of plants, adhering to the surface zone.

For features of spawning, all three types are close to carp. They are spring fish with single spawn. The females of large-billed buffalo become sexually mature at 4-5 years with a body length of about 40-45 cm, males – somewhat earlier, with a body length of about 30-35 cm.

All types of buffalo grow up pretty fast and overcome carp in this thing. In the right situation, buffalo to fall can grow to 10,4 cm, year – 18 cm. In catching, regular species is 35 – 78 cm long and from 0,9 to 19,5 kg of mass. Maximum size – to 120 cm in length and 36 kilograms, sometimes up to 45 kilograms of mass. In the conditions of Belarus, with a rather high density of planting in ponds, the maximum mass of juveniles during cultivation in monoculture was 20.4 (average 14.9).

The high degree of adaptation to habitat conditions and omnivores make buffalo a promising fish farming facility in Belarus.

(Ictiobus bubalus) – The maximum size of 120 centimetres and weight of 25 kilograms (sometimes smaller). The lifespan of 13 years, the schooling fish prefers to stay near the shore in the bottom areas with rapid current spawns in May-June.

Has lighter skin tone, than big-mouthed buffalo young species has dark-grey-bronze back with blue shade, lighter sides with gold shade, white belly, monophonic fins, brownish-grey colour. As the size of the fish increases observed some colour bleaching.

Significant quantities of it live only in deep rivers with clear water and a relatively fast current. Also prefers streams during the flood period, does not enter the floodplain. In shallow water bodies, it seems, comes by accident. Leads a schooling lifestyle.

The breed is similar to bigmouthed buffalo, but, because of cold water, maturity occurs one year later than large buffalo. Grows pretty fast, is not inferior to our cultivated carp. In natural conditions for the first year grows up to 10-13 cm. In the catches are common specimens up to 37-70 cm long and up to 9 kg of weight. The maximum dimensions are up to 95 cm in length and 18 kg in weight. In the conditions of pond farms of Belarus, the maximum weight of juveniles was 10.1 g (average 7.1 g).

Just as bigmouthed buffalo, pretty perspective inbreeding on warm and clean waters, rich with plankton and benthos. The most promising for the settlement of natural reservoirs, in which it can produce high fish productivity on a natural forage base.

Ictiobus niger is the smallest fish of this species: the size does not exceed 100 centimetres and weighs up to 18 kilograms. The fish is single, keeps near the bottom. It occurs in large and small rivers with a rapid current.
Dark body colour, ordinarily dark grey or dark bronze, with a greenish tinge on the back. Fins are single-coloured, dark grey. A slightly lighter colouration is found only in fish that continuously inhabit very turbid waters.

Places of living of black buffalo are frequently similar with bigmouthed buffalo, but it likes muddier water, with the strongly silted bottom, small silted ponds and swamps. Unlike the two previous species, it keeps in the bottom layers and resembles carp by the nature of its behaviour.

It didn’t research enough breeding process in natural waters. Reproduction in pond farms is conducted, as well as with buffalo larva, in fish-breeding devices. It can be a precious object for pond fish farming in small, heavily silted and waterlogged ponds and landings, as well as for stocking heavily eutrophicated lakes.

Unfortunately, due to some bureaucratic obstacles, this species was never inhabited in our reservoirs, particularly in the Dnepr River, as well as the paddlefish with the stripper (striped perch), which also had to plant at the mouth of the Dnepr River. Belarussians went further and, following the example of normal civilised countries, the settlement of non-local promising species in fish farming began.

Black buffalo (Ictiobusniger) fish sort of sucker. Dwells in the waters of the Mississippi (USA) and is widely dispersed as an object of pond fish farming. In Belarus, work with this fish began in 1976. It prefers muddy waters with a strongly silted bottom, small silted ponds, and marshes. It is kept in the bottom layers and resembles carp by the nature of its behaviour.

You can distinguish sucker by thick, covered with hairs lips. This fish doesn’t have horns, there are no grains, and well-marked scales covered the body is always with well-marked scales. The largest of these species is the large-sized buffalo, or buffalo-fish reaches 1.2 m in length, black buffalo is somewhat smaller.

There is one more perspective for acclimatisation and carp fishing type. It’s a prominent White cupid.

A white cupid  (Latin Ctenopharyngodon Idella) is a fish of the Cyprinidae family, the only species of the Ctenopharyngodon type.

Long body, almost not compressed laterally, covered with thick scales. Length up to 125 cm, weight up to 35 kg grows pretty fast. In the Amur river waters, the white cupid becomes sexually mature at a distance of 68-75 cm and the age of 9-10 years. The white matchmaker is the inhabitant of the Amur (in the middle and lower reaches), the Volga, the Don, the Yenisei, and many other freshwater rivers. The main spawning grounds located in the Ussuri, Sungari, Lake Khanka, the flat tributaries of China, the Volga (in the lower currents), the Don (in the middle and lower reaches), the Dnipr-Bug estuary.

White Cupid is herbivorous, eating water plants. In 60s years of XX century, white cupid acclimatised in the European part of USSR. In current time is an object of fishing in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Kazakhstan (the Ili River, Lake Balkhash) and many European countries. Breeding of white cupid together with carp increases the effectiveness of fishing because white matchmaker is not a competitor to carp on the forage base. From the amateur fishery is a beautiful trophy.

But in the fish centre in lake Bungsanlam 40 minutes from Bangkok, similar copies are found. And one local fisherman managed to catch a specimen about two meters long and 120 kilograms in weight. The age of this barbel is about 10-12 years old; they are old and very fatty. For such a relatively weak country that lives from fishing, the catch of this level is the goal of all life. He caught a carp with an ordinary fishing rod with a particular tackle. It is clear that the fight was long because carp of this size is very strong. Here, pure luck and strength of the muscles do nothing.

The main rule that must remember in the fight against such creatures: do not give her a moment of peace. Constant jerks weaken the fish, it is forced to lose a lot of energy on such chaotic movements. The next step is to bring the fish as close as possible to the shore. While the fish is healthy, it is difficult to do. All, after a couple of hours of struggle, the carp managed to be brought to the shore and caught in the net. After the measurements, it turned out that this is the largest freshwater fish that could found with a rod.

Although the Bangkok is not yet a record among the fish of this family, in the Belgian lake Ostend in 1937, a river monster raged for half a year, which terrified residents and tourists. Only when it was possible to catch this beast, the surprising truth has opened. It turned out that the river “monster” is a carp from a family of barbel. Just the size of it is just stunning: with a length from head to tail of only 3.5 meters, he weighed 190 kilograms. Age of our hero has already passed 30, so it’s not surprising that he surrendered almost without a fight. The fish was sick and could live for another five years in a particular pool.
